THE EQUITY went to Joanne’s Valu-mart on July 20 to ask residents how they feel about the mandatory mask policy implemented by the government of Quebec on July 18, 2020.

Lois Smith, retired, has been mindful of the threat of the coronavirus since the beginning, as she is prone to pneuomonia and has bronchial problems. She’s been wearing a mask all along. “I think it’s great,” Smith said. “It’s protecting me and it’s protecting others that I’m in contact with, because anyone that has a cold or is coughing in that, it gives them protection from the droplets, or the sneezing, and everything that comes with the cold.”
Sue Foster is retired and she started wearing a mask much earlier on in the pandemic. “I’m all for it, they should have did this right from the beginning,” Foster said. She added that she believes this is a start in the right direction towards keeping the Pontiac safe.
Valu-mart grocery clerk Steven Trudeau has to keep his mask on throughout his shift while stocking shelves in the store. “Personally, I think they’re okay, it’s just that some people have a hard time breathing in them,” Trudeau said. “I know every once in a while if I work too hard sometimes the mask makes it hard to breathe.” Trudeau explained that employees are allowed to remove their masks during their break, but he acknowledged that the masks can make things quite hot for him. “Some people might have asthma or something like that, but in the end I think it makes people feel safer.”
Marie-Claude Dumouchel is an accountant and she had not been wearing a mask before they became mandatory. “It is what it is, you gotta wear it, you gotta do it, it is what it is,” Dumouchel said. She said that wearing one does not make her feel safer.
Doug Hodgins, retired, has also been wearing a mask for some time now. “If you have to wear them, you have to wear them,” Hodgins said. “Doesn’t bother me a bit. [It] feels alright, I don’t like wearing them but if you have to wear them, you have to wear them.”
