Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), says it is investigating the circumstances of an arrest made by the Campbell’s Bay Sûreté du Québec police on the morning of Friday, Mar. 1.

According to a BEI press release, an individual arrested by the SQ was sent to hospital that morning after being found unconscious in an SQ interrogation room.

The press release states that the SQ arrested the individual at their home at 8:40 a.m.

At 11:15 a.m., the individual was found unconscious on the floor of the interrogation room.

The release says first aid was administered on site and the individual was transported to the hospital where they were judged to be in critical condition.

The BEI launched its investigation at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, and has tasked five investigators to look into the events surrounding the arrest.

The police watchdog has also requested Montreal police pick up the original criminal investigation that led the SQ to arrest this individual in the first place, as the SQ cannot continue this work while under investigation themselves, according to Jérémie Comtois, spokesperson for the BEI.

Comtois told THE EQUITY the BEI is in possession of surveillance camera footage from the interrogation room which will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

SQ spokesperson Sergeant Marc Tessier, said the SQ is unable to comment on the arrest due to the ongoing investigation being conducted by the BEI.
