Dr. Doria Mira, the Lotus Clinic’s new recruit, has no intention of returning to big-city life.

Mira, who is originally from Algeria, moved to Canada in 2014 to pursue a career in medicine. Medicine has always been . . .

a path that Mira wanted to take. Like many, as a young child Mira wanted to become a veterinarian. As she grew up, her dream shifted. Seeing her father work as a doctor and many of her family members work in the medical field, Mira focused her intentions on becoming a physician.

When she moved to Canada she attended the University of Sherbrooke for four years, achieving her predoctoral degree. She then lived in Montreal for two years in order to complete her residency.

Before her career began, after more than six years of schooling, Mira decided to take some time for herself, she said “I took a break for a few months to travel to see family. It was good.”

Given that Mira has family in Gatineau, she looked for work that would allow her to be near them. Furthermore, she knew that she wanted to work in a rural setting as it would allow her to have more hands-on experience overseeing complicated cases, and working alongside specialists. She explained, “you can acquire a lot of skills when you work in rural areas, because family docs manage complicated cases, and they are in collaboration with a lot of specialists by phone, usually. So in that way, you can learn a lot.”

So far Mira is enjoying her time living in Shawville and working at the Lotus Clinic. As of right now she is not planning on leaving the region, “if I don’t have any reason to move back to the city, I won’t be moving back to the city” Mira explained.
