Eighteen teams took to the ice at the Shawville Curling Club on Saturday for the Quyon Lions Club’s 47th annual bonspiel.

First place went to the Shawville Lions Club’s team, made up of James Howard (skip), Greg Hayes (third), Sam Hayes (second) and Dave Cummings (lead).

Quyon resident John Harrison started curling more seriously when he moved to the town nearly four decades ago. He was at the tournament Saturday and said that it was nice to see the “community pride.”

“It’s good to see everyone,” Harrison said. “Over the cold winter months, it’s good to get out and see each other again for a fun event.”

Glen Leach, the organizer of the event, has been volunteering with the Quyon Lions Club for 35 years and curling for 25. He said that it’s a good feeling to see the community support the club’s causes.

“It’s amazing when you’re trying to do good for the community that people come out and support,” Leach said. “It’s amazing that they do it for us.”

The event fundraised approximately $850 for the Quyon Lions Club, which Leach said will be used to support ongoing efforts by the club, including fundraising for community groups.
