Over 60 people came out to Joanne’s Valu-mart in Shawville last Thursday for a pre-Canada Day barbeque.
“This is Canada’s 150 campaign for Loblaws,” explained owner Joanne Dumochel. “At stores that are participating across Canada, we’re bringing together our friends and neighbours to have a meal.”

The event was held in the store’s front lobby, as the incessant rain made an outdoor party unfeasible.
“We had planned to be outside, but this morning we just shifted gears and changed plan,” she said. “It all worked out.”
Prizes were awarded for the most generations of one family present, youngest and oldest in attendance and several more. Shawville Mayor Sandra Murray presented awards to the winners of Dr. S.E. McDowell’s Canada Day poster contest. First place went to Emily Stephens, second went to Jaycie Hodgins and third to Isaac Graham.
