Shawville’s Cory Smart has received his share of awards during his three year association with the Kanata Valley Lasers. But the entire Central Junior A organization showed its appreciation of the 20-year-old centre on Thursday night.
March 8th was celebrated as “Cory Smart Night” by the club, at a cermony preceding the Lasers’ last regular season home game at the Jack Charron Arena. Local and Shawville fans were in attendance to witness the tribute to Smart, who is playing his last season as the Lasers captain.
Among those honouring Smart were a few past residents of the Pontiac who are now assocated with the Lasers. Coach James A Mulligan, Player Personnel Director Emmett O’Donnell, and Lasers President Don Brown were on the ice to honour their team’s first and only captain.
Smart was showered with an array of awards from hats and coats right down to the use of a car for a week in the ceremony from Michael Davies Motors.
Letters of congratulation from past team-mates started off the night. A few of the notables on hand for the presentation were Kanata Mayor Des Adams and Shawville Mayor, Albert Armstrong.
Those with presentations for the Lasers’ Number 14 included the Ottawa Senators (where Shawville’s Kelly Hodgins plays), the Kanata Sports Club, local sponsor Petro Canada, and Laser supplier A&B Sports. Des Keon, the President of the Lasers and Allan Murphy the Vice President, hand-
ed Cory a Boulova watch on behalf of the club.
The Shawville contingent with Art MacIntyre and Fergus Wrinn (who has coached many of Cory’s teams throughout the years) made presenta tions on behalf of the Pontiac Junior B’s and Shawville Minor Hockey. Kevin Meisner and Cory MacIntyre of Shawville played minor and AA hockey with Smart, and had some Lumber King mementoS to present. The Lasers club also had gifts for Cory’s parents Beryl and Art during the presention.
Hat Trick
Smart didn’t dissappoint the hometown fans after the awards. The 5’10” 175-pound centre helped his team in taking the match with the Ottawa Senators 5-3. Smart netted

a hat trick for the first time this year in the effort, while also picking up an assist in the game to finish a game best backing in the game for both teams.
He departs Lasers
Cory will be leaving his team with his eyes set on St. Francis Xavier Universtiy where he has been accepted, to obtain a B. Comm. He will be playing with the university hockey team and stands during the next five years. He also hopes to continue playing hockey with his decision has left him in a good position to be picked up by one of the upper skates disappointed teams in Canada.
The Central Junior A has been an outstanding success for Cory during its three years of existence, from being a draft pick in 1987 in a trade that could have moved on to the Peterborough Petes of the OHL, to his last home game as the Jack Charron Arena where the whole team helped celebrate the tribute to him, with an amazing show of appreciation for him for outstanding season with the outstanding Ottawa Universtiy.
